England vs SriLanka International T20 : Predictions !

July 5, 2016, 6:30 pm

Tymal Mills and Dawid Malan are in contention to make their international debuts as England take on Sri Lanka in a T20I at the Ageas Bowl on Tuesday:

Preview: England have already swept the test and the one day series without losing any match. The sides last met in this format during the World T20 earlier this year with England coming out on top by 10 runs despite Angelo Mathews' unbeaten knock of 73 from 54 balls.
However, England will be without a number of key players on this occasion with Ben Stokes still out with a knee injury and Joe Root, Alex Hales and Moeen Ali rested.
However, England captain Eoin Morgan believes that their replacements - Mills and Malan - have earned their chance and hinted that at least one of them will be handed their debut against Sri Lanka.
"It helps that both squads [ODI and T20] are very similar and for this particular game, the guys who play all three formats have been rested," he said.
"I think it's a good opportunity for them to take a rest and a good opportunity to look at another couple of faces.
"Obviously, having Tymal and Dawid - they've rightly earned their positions. Dawid has scored a lot of runs over the last two or so years in county cricket and Tymal is bowling pretty quick at the moment. Hopefully we'll get a look at one of them, or maybe both of them, tomorrow."
Morgan said he was "excited" by what Mills can bring to the team but warned against putting the left-arm quick under too much pressure.

The condensed T20 format will mask several of their deficiencies, most notably there inability to sustain periods of dominance. And therein lies their opportunity to pull a fast one on England. Eoin Morgan's side, despite notable absentees in Joe Root and Ben Stokes, retains the exuberance that saw them reach the final of the World T20 in April.

When: July 5, 2016 - 18.30 Local Time, 23.00 IST
Where: The Rose Bowl, Southampton
What to expect: The two teams played out a thriller at the Feroz Shah Kotla during the World T20. With rain expected to stay away in Southampton, another high-scoring thriller could be on the cards.

Team News:

England

The hosts welcome Sam Billings, Dawid Malan, Tymal Mills and Liam Dawson into their 13-man squad. Morgan, in his pre-match press conference, confirmed that James Vince and Dawson would feature in the playing XI.

Billings and Malan have been rewarded for their consistent performances in the ongoing T20 blast while left-arm pacer Mills, who was diagnosed with a congenital back issue in 2015, has once again attracted hype from the media as a future first-team regular.

Sri Lanka

Upul Tharanga's switch as a lower-order batsman has been rather seamless. In the absence of Thisara Perera, Tharanga and Dasun Shanaka will have to shoulder responsibility of giving the team impetus in the final overs. Off spinner Suraj Randiv's contribution in the series has been restricted to a solitary game and he will need to present a strong enough case in the nets for that to change tomorrow.
